International Women’s Day 2024

To celebrate and mark International Women’s Day 2024, our talented female members of Clancy tuned in virtually to the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) summit in Dublin from the beautiful surroundings of the Cashel Palace Hotel followed by afternoon tea after the event.

We are very fortunate across Clancy to have some of the industries most talented individuals who are also women, the construction industry has come a long way when it comes to the representation of women – but there is still more to be done. Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality. Collectively we can all #InspireInclusion.

We need more women in construction to reflect the society we live in. For too long the industry was considered to be more suited to men, but thankfully this has changed, and continues to develop, with construction becoming an ideal industry for anyone to work in. Women make up around 14% of the overall construction workforce, this rate has steadily increased over the years, but an obstacle can be perceived biases and perceptions of the industry.

It is important to remember women have long been pioneers in construction – with their achievements spanning centuries – from revolutionizing urban planning to designing new forms of building. This year, the theme for International Women’s Day is Inspire Inclusion. The goal behind Women’s Day is to spread the message of gender equality, celebrate the achievements and contributions of women in different spheres, and work towards building a society free of all gender biases, promoting equality, diversity and inclusion as a whole. On this day, people appreciate the strong, intelligent, talented and simply extraordinary women in our lives.

It was a truly wonderful day celebrating women in Construction and listening to some inspirational stories from other successful women in the industry. The theme of the day was inspiring inclusion which resonates greatly with us. Gender equality, celebrating the achievements and contributions of women in different spheres, and working towards building a society free of all gender biases, promoting equality, diversity and inclusion being the ultimate goal.

It was great to hear from long-serving members of staff Mary Denn and Christine McClean on their experiences working in the Construction Industry and the strides that have been made. We also spoke with Clancy Managing Director John O’Shaughnessy who highlighted the need for more female representation in the Construction and targets Clancy have set to increase our own percentage.
