Abbeyleix House, a landmark of Irish architectural heritage, was originally designed in 1773 by renowned neoclassical architect James Wyatt. Built as the seat of the de Vesci family, the stately three-storey residence stands as one of Ireland’s most historically significant homes. Its construction coincided with the development of Abbeyleix village, Ireland’s oldest planned estate town, further enhancing the cultural and historical prominence of the estate.

Clancy was entrusted with the comprehensive restoration and roofing upgrade of this iconic building under its new ownership. The works undertaken were both sensitive to the historic fabric and technically advanced, ensuring the integrity and longevity of the structure.

The restoration began with the complete removal of existing roof coverings, followed by a detailed upgrade and restructuring of the original timber carcass.

All valleys and dormers were meticulously upgraded using Code 7 lead, with hips and ridges finished in copper clippings for durability and historical accuracy. The pitched roofs were re-covered with Penrhyn County Grade slates, selected for their quality and aesthetic fidelity to the period.

Clancy erected full encapsulated scaffold to protect the building while works were completed.
