Schoil Bhride Portlaoise
Project Name and Location: Schoil Bhride, Knockmay, Harpurs Lane , Portlaoise,
Currently under construction Clancy in partnership with Moloney O‘Beirne Architects, Douglas Carrol Mechanical & Electrical Engineers and Donnachadh O’Brien & Associates Structural Engineers have been given the undertaken to construct a new 32 classroom junior school for the Schoil Bhride Board of Management and the Department of Education. Construction of the school begun in January 2016 and will be complete in June 2017. Elements of the construction include an RC frame with finished blockwork in fill, steel frame, Kingzip roof panels, zinc roof sheeting and civils works. Additional to the 32 classroom school catering for in excess of 850 pupils, Clancy are also constructing six ball/play pitches on the site of the existing occupied school which will require demolition of the existing blockwork school and prefab units
Construction of an RC frame/blockwork/steelwork building adjacent to a live 850 pupil junior school located in the heart of the Knockmay Community raised a number of logistical and safety issues for the Construction team.
How we Overcame the Challenge
Control measures were put in place to facilitate the safe running of the school & construction site.
- Clear definition of the construction site and school areas by using plywood hoarding.
- Segregation of the site entrance & school entrance.
- Construction of a staff carpark adjacent to the school to allow the safe egress of staff into their place of work.
- Restriction of construction deliveries to the site during busy school periods.
Currently due for completion June 2017.
